We take your pet’s health to heart. That’s why we’re elevating our vaccine standards to keep them safe. Beginning on October 1, 2026, we will require all dogs to be fully vaccinated against leptospirosis (lepto) and canine influenza (flu).
In alignment with leading veterinary recommendations, these additional vaccines are part of our ongoing commitment to keeping pets happy and healthy. They will be required for all dogs, along with Rabies, DHPP/DAPP, and Bordetella. The added vaccines provide added protection, creating a healthier environment where every pet can thrive.

Both vaccines provide critical protection to dogs who spend time in social environments such as boarding or daycare facilities, as well as dog parks and other spaces.
Pet Paradise is committed to providing a safe, healthy space for pets and for people. Cases of both leptospirosis and canine flu are reported in communities each year. In fact, AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) and the ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine) updated their recommendations to include the leptospirosis vaccine as a “core” vaccine for dogs, just like rabies.
Ultimately, our goal is to keep pets safe. Including these two vaccines as part of our vaccination requirement is intended to keep everyone in the pack - both pets and people - safe.
First, check to make sure your pet's required vaccines, including leptospirosis and canine influenza, are up to date. Next, visit a veterinarian to update any boosters or vaccines your pet may need. Finally, upload proof of vaccination through the Pet Paradise app, online, or in person by October 1, 2026.
Leptospirosis is caused by a bacterium that can infect pets and people. It can be spread via urine, so coming into contact with soil or materials that have been sprayed with the bacteria can cause it to spread. At its worst, leptospirosis bacterium can cause permanent liver and kidney damage or escalate to become fatal. This is part of the reason multiple animal health organizations have deemed being vaccinated against leptospirosis to be part of a “core” set of vaccines – meaning that these are the most fundamental and critical vaccines for pets to have as part of their health care plan.
Canine flu is a virus that quickly spreads in the air via coughing and/or sneezing. Because it is a respiratory virus, it can present additional risk to some dogs, especially those who are young, elderly, or immunocompromised. We can reduce the risk of illness for all dogs in our facilities if they are vaccinated against canine flu.
While cats can technically be infected with these diseases, it is exceptionally rare.
Leptospirosis and canine influenza both require two vaccines, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, for your dog to be vaccinated. After that, your dog will only need one vaccine of each type annually.
Note: If the second vaccine dose (injection) is given more than 6 weeks after the first injection, the vaccine will not be effective, and the cycle will need to restart from the beginning (first injection).
Vaccines provide protection and may limit clinical signs, but they do not prevent a pet from contracting a disease. Vaccines can reduce the impact and make it easier for the pet to recover if they encounter and contract the disease.
As dogs and their pet parents spend time being social, it increases the potential for illnesses, like flus, to spread. It's similar to the flu spreading among children in kindergartens. The more time they spend playing and socializing with others, the more opportunity there is for a sneeze or cough to spread germs.
Socialization for pets is critically important to a healthy, happy life. We would not recommend reducing your pet’s opportunities to spend time with other dogs, but we also want to provide the safest environment possible, which is why we have added additional vaccine requirements. This change increases the level of safety for all pets in our resort.
Unfortunately, no. Starting October 1, 2026, we will require all dogs to have completed both injections of both the leptospirosis and canine flu vaccines. This is because one vaccine alone does not provide protection.
Yes. As long as both doses of both the leptospirosis and canine flu vaccines have been given before your dog arrives at Pet Paradise, we will be happy to welcome them into our resort for their stay. However, the protection provided by vaccines is not immediate, as it takes time for the immune system to react to a vaccine. Ideally, your dog should complete their schedule of vaccine doses at least two weeks before attending daycare or boarding.
No. We are not able to call each pet’s veterinarian. However, if your veterinarian has questions about our vaccine policies, we are happy to speak with them.
Both vaccines have been available for several years. Leptospirosis vaccines have been accessible in the U.S. for more than 50 years.
The canine flu vaccine was fully approved by the USDA in 2010. Like flu vaccines for people, the canine flu vaccine has been updated multiple times to protect dogs against newer strains of the flu.
No, starting October 1, 2026, all dogs, independent of age, breed, or medical condition, must have both leptospirosis and canine flu vaccines complete. This is the same standard we have for all other vaccines, including rabies.
For the safety of all dogs in our resort, we cannot make an exception when it comes to having the leptospirosis and canine flu vaccines complete before a dog can spend time with us.
Pet Paradise is following the guidance of our NewDay Veterinary Care team as well as other animal health organizations such as AAHA (the American Animal Hospital Association) and the ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine).
We recommend talking with your veterinarian about your dog’s lifestyle, including spending time at facilities like ours. Knowing those types of details can impact the vaccines a veterinarian may recommend.
No. Starting October 1, 2026, all dogs must have both leptospirosis and canine flu vaccines completed. We cannot accept a letter from your veterinarian to exempt or excuse your dog from this requirement. This is the same standard we have for other vaccines, including rabies.
Every dog in our facility must be up to date on all vaccines, including leptospirosis and canine flu, starting October 1, 2026. Dogs that arrive for grooming are still in spaces with other dogs, which means they need to have all current vaccines.
While your dog may play one-on-one when spending time with us, the play areas and common areas your dog will walk, play, and spend time in are used by other dogs at other times. This means they can come into contact with or spread bacteria and viruses. For this reason, we need all dogs in our buildings to have the same vaccines.
Starting October 1, 2026, all dogs – including those of pet parents who have used our services many times over the years – will be required to have both the leptospirosis and canine flu vaccines.
